Only one in every four car occupants in India wear seat belts, according to a survey conducted by Maruti Suzuki.

The “Seat belt Use in India” survey was carried out across 17 cities in all regions, covering over 2,500 drivers and passengers, reports the Times of India. It reveals that 81% of female drivers ignore the legal requirement to wear a seat belt, compared to 68% of male drivers.

According to the report, only strict enforcement would make more people wear their seat belts. One in five respondents said it was the fear of police action and fines which motivated them to wear seat belts.
