A new road safety app has been launched that helps drivers make better vehicle choices and save lives on Australian roads.

The “ANCAP Safety” app, the first of its kind globally, provides a new mechanism for consumers to access Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) safety rating information in the lead-up to a vehicle purchase. It also provides additional safety-related content, features and news for consumers to use post-purchase.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Darren Chester, joined with ANCAP to launch the app.

“Getting Australians to drive the safest car they can afford will help to reduce road trauma and by checking this app, vehicle buyers will be better informed before they make their choice,” Mr Chester said. “Safer vehicles are a vital element of the Safe Systems approach to road safety and the Australian Government is proud to share this important new tool to enhance the safety of all Australian road users.”

New app helps Australians make safer vehicle choices

ANCAP safety ratings provide consumers with independent information on the comparable safety of new vehicles sold in Australia. The Australian Government has supported ANCAP since 2010, providing $8.25 million in funding to date, with a further $1.1 million committed for 2017-18.

“The app is a useful tool for those looking to buy a new car as it provides a wealth of safety information at their fingertips,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, James Goodwin. “We would encourage all consumers to opt for the safest car that suits their needs and this app, which has easily comparable vehicle safety information, helps them do that.”
