Motorcycle crashes are far costlier than car crashes, both in lives lost and in medical expenses, according to a study carried out in the Canadian province of Ontario.
Researchers found that the death rate from motorcycle crashes was five times greater than from car crashes, and the rate of severe injury was 10 times greater. The cost to the health care system was found to be six times greater.
“Expressed in other terms, Ontario’s health care payer (the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care) would expect to save $13.5 million per year if collision rates remained unchanged and the province’s registered motorcycles were replaced with automobiles,” the researchers stated.
The study was published in the November issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
