Italy’s parliament has passed legislation that creates a new offence of “omocidio stradale”, or ‘road homicide’.

As reported on road.cc, the legislation, which sets out new punishments for people who cause death while driving, will be passed into law once formally ratified by the President of the Republic, Sergio Matterella.

Features of the new legislation include culpable homicide becoming a crime in itself as well as increased penalties for truck drivers, those who commit the offence while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and those who flee the scene.
