A van driving lane ‘hogger’ has been convicted of careless driving for failing to move over to the inside lane of the motorway on the M62 near Huddersfield, UK.

According to the Huddersfield Examiner, the driver of the Citroen Berlingo van was left with a £940 court bill and five points on his licence after cruising at 60mph in the middle lane, despite the inside lane being free.

Police said six drivers had to brake and overtake after being blocked by the Berlingo.

New on-the-spot fines were brought in by the government in August 2013, specifically covering middle lane hogging.

The court conviction is thought to be one of the first for the offence.
