Western Australians looking to purchase a second-hand vehicle now have access to a tool to help them determine the safest used car for their family.

The 2017 Used Car Safety Ratings (UCSR) measure four factors of vehicle safety performance for passenger and light commercial vehicles in Australia and New Zealand. These factors include how a vehicle protects its own occupants a crash; how well a vehicle protects other road users in a crash including other vehicle occupants, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists; the overall injury outcomes in a crash; and the relative risk of a vehicle being involved in a crash.

“The Used Car Safety Ratings’ ‘Star Picks’ enable consumers to make an informed decision on the safest second-hand vehicle for their family, whether it’s being used as a second vehicle, or a teenager’s first car,” said Acting Road Safety Commissioner Iain Cameron. “We urge Western Australians to put safety at the top of the shopping list when making a used car purchase, and referring to the buyer’s guide before making a purchase will give you peace of mind.”
