Research carried out at Monash University, Australia, has identified a need to improve driver competency through an effective workplace road safety management system and review organisational incident and infringement management.
The study, ‘Workplace road safety risk management: An investigation into Australian practices’, involved interviews with managers from a range of small, medium and large organisations to elicit information on current organisational practices. It used a benchmarking tool to assess the maturity of these practices.
One of the key highlights of the study was that driving is viewed as a secondary role function to the individual’s ‘job’. As a result, recruitment, induction and training activities focused on primary role function, not driving.
The results highlighted a need to build accountability within organisations, improve communication practices, improve journey management and reduce vehicle-related risk.
In Australia, more than 30% of the traffic volume can be attributed to work-related vehicles.
